The Sacred Heart of Jesus
In Catholic tradition, a stylised representation of the heart of Jesus, in pictures or statuary, is often found in churches, as here at St Werburgh's, or in family homes. The depiction of a physical heart emphasises Jesus's humanity, and also God's love for humanity, as expressed through the person of Christ. The usual imagery, of a heart encircled by a crown of thorns and surmounted by a cross, reminds the viewer of Jesus's suffering and death on Calvary, but the surrounding incandescent radiance recalls his resurrection and ascension to the glory of the Godhead.
The Litany of the Sacred Heart, a duologue of invocations between cantor and respondents (the usual response is Have mercy on us) was initiated by Pope Leo XIII in 1899 and expresses many of the virtues and characteristics represented by the Sacred Heart.
