St Werburgh’s leads the support at HMP Berwyn

St Werburgh’s SVP Conference Members helped to bring in the New Year 2026 for the men at HMP Berwyn, with an even greater number of volunteer visitors for the usual Saturday Mass.

Providing visiting support for the Wrexham prison since its opening in 2017, St Werburgh’s  Conference Members today form the largest group of regular visitors, with seven or eight attending to assist with the Mass and to meet and talk with the men afterwards.  HMP Berwyn is a ‘Category C’ adult male institution and is the largest ‘Super Prison’ in the whole of the UK, accommodating over 2,000 men.

“As a Conference, we are proud that our members are so keen to support the men inside our nearby local prison.” said Conference President Marco Abbiati.  “We see it as part of our greater befriending role (‘I was in prison and you visited me’  Matthew 25: 35 - 40) and we know they very much appreciate us giving up our Saturday mornings to be with them, to pray with them and to talk with them.”
