St Werburgh's Roman Catholic Parish, Chester

Michael Walsh

Pte 5th Siege Company, Royal Engineers, Royal Monmouthshire 6071

Died: 07-01-1916 at Gallipoli, possibly age 35

His grave is III.F.168 East Mudras Military Cemetery, Lemnos Island, Greece.

Michael was entitled to the British War Medal but it was not collected.

Michael’s name was on the original memorial board at St Werburgh’s.

A possible family in the parish was that of Michael and Bridget Mary Walsh of 7 Steam Mill Street. Michael Snr was a nursery gardener. By 1911 seven children had been born to the couple but only two had survived, Michael and his younger brother John. Michael had possibly been in the army since about 1900 as he did not appear in Steven Street on any census after 1891, but there is no record of his death.
