Dear brothers and sisters,
I write these lines as I reach the end of my annual retreat; an opportunity, over five days, away in the countryside, immersed in greater silence, to step back, spend more time in prayer and reflection, and consider what or rather who is at the heart of my life and ministry as a priest.
Saturday, the 10th, marked exactly one year since my arrival at St Werburgh’s. Time goes by so quickly; a reminder, as the Gospel today shows us, to use our time well. It seems like only yesterday that I was preparing to leave Bogotá to come here. Over the past 12 months, I have been blessed to meet so many of you, to hear your stories and be encouraged by your faith and commitment. I have shared in your joys, and, yes, in some cases in your sorrows. At times, just one day can feel like something of an emotional rollercoaster, and it would make no sense without prayer, the source to which I must return daily, as I try to live out the demands of my vocation and lead our parish community, and those who visit us to Christ, through the proclamation of God’s Word and the celebration of the sacraments. I am conscious that there is much to be done, and the harvest in Chester is indeed rich and plentiful! Yet the work of a priest can only be done, to use the words of St Paul, “through him who strengthens me.” Aware of my own shortcomings, especially when considering the extensive field of my apostolate, I must begin again and again in prayer, confident that “my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus, after all, the Lord is our shepherd, as this Sunday’s most familiar psalm recalls, and in him we want for nothing. Please continue to pray for your parish priest and be assured that I pray daily for you all and for your intentions. Yours in Christ, Fr David +
